I went back and forth on when to share this post. You see it is my belief that your system should start with kits and designers and progress from there in levels.
When I organized my supplies, I spent about a month of 15 minute segments here and there keywording the kits and digital designers for all my supplies. When I was done with that, I needed a break!
In the spirit of making things easier for you all, I am going to jump ahead in the curriculum and share my entire Scrapbooking keyword list. In doing so, I need to jump ahead and also share how I made my keyword list and why things are the way they are so you can start on your keyword list and decide if my keyword list will be of any benefit to you!
The first thing you need to do is go back to your pre-class assignment of what inspires you to scrapbook. This list is your jumping point for filling out a workflow map with items that inspire you and how your mind works when it comes to scrapbooking. From that process map you will be able to decide what keywords you want to create. Here is what my process map looks like:
Not surprisingly, photos are my main reason for scrapbooking and the items going from them are all the things I go to in my workflow. From that workflow I get the keyword list you see in this post.
Just so you know, these keyword lists break down into even more detailed items nested in each group, but this gives you an idea of what I use most.
The numbers are to delineate what is most important to me in order of keywording. My first priority is the designer/kit keywording. The next is color because color is a major source of inspiration for me. And it goes down the list.
Another thing you all should know – I am pretty sure this keyword list will be refined over time. That is perfectly ok because you want your keyword list to be a living list of items you want to track. Your keyword basically sets the boundaries for how you want to see things. It isn’t set in stone, it is for convenience in your workflow. So don’t get hung up on the details. Make a keyword list that works for you – not what’s popular – or what everyone else doing.
Do yourself a favor and set your keywords up to support your personal workflow and how you think. This is the only way your system will truly work – I know from experience!
So your assignments for this week (you can choose the order you will do them in):
- Keyword your supplies with Designer and kit keywords
- Fill out your ProcessMap with items from your PreClass Inspiration List
- Figure out the order of importance for the items you want to keyword and number them accordingly in your Lightroom keyword list.
- Import Kayla’s keyword list (only if it will be helpful to you) and make changes for your workflow.

So you now need to know how to deal with keyword lists, right? Here’s your video:

Thank you for another wonderful Lightroom organization video. I already have my keywords, but I imported your’s to see if I’d like to make refinements to my own system. I love having access to your thinking. And I had not even thought of importing the DS videos from my premier membership. This will make it so much easier to find them for viewing!

Your keywords are GREAT and I AM SURE I will use them. Thank you! However, I have a question – I find my inspiration by holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, etc), seasons (autumn, winter, etc) and events (birthdays, weddings, vacations, etc). After looking at your flowchart I am confused how I can incorporate your chart and mine together. I have never used keywords but then again I have never been organized and I know that is what is keeping me from soaring in this beloved hobby. I have scrapped several layouts but given the vast amount of products I have purchased, I have a long way to justify the investment. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you could give me.

Glad you found it helpful!

Connie – you will want to change the order of your keywords. So all you have to do is right click on the keyword and choose Edit name and then change it to 2Holidays 3Seasons and 4Events. Then click and drag keywords under those headings or just create new keywords.
This is all about what works for yoU!

Kayla – Thank you SO VERY MUCH!! I haven’t the words to express my appreciation to you for taking time from your busy life to teach all of us about Lightroom and digi/photo organization and all of the other many subjects that you have taught through the years. I consider your site to be the #1 go-to for instruction and all things digi, scrappy, and photogy.
I am SO excited to get going on Lightroom. I am finishing my pre-class assignment/organization and EXCITED to get to the keywords!! Thank you again!! And thank you for answering my question.

Hi Kayla, I’ve finally gotten around to writing down my keywords with the help of your list…here’s the link to my page: http://lifeasdinkers.blogspot.com/ . Sure hope it’ll help some other scrapper.
Thanks again for your class. Hugs!

Great post with so much insight – thanks for sharing – I LOVE your keyword list. It is so fun to see how we all organize things similarly but just a tad different. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much!! I just started scrapbooking again, and I didn’t think I had a process, until I realized that I do after hearing your process. I also start with photos, then templates (I like thinking your way of thinking as an efficient scraper instead of my old way of thinking of myself as a lost scraper needing guidance), then journaling, then picking colors. I really don’t know the designers very well, but when I see something I like I tend to use their kit only on the layout. Thank for clarifying the way scrapbook to myself.
